ABS-CBN ventures into TV Shopping

ABS-CBN Corporation entered into a joint venture project with CJ O Shopping Corporation, one of the world’s largest home shopping companies, to introduce a new TV home shopping lifestyle to Filipino consumers.

In a briefing, Paolo Pineda, ABS-CBN Business development head said yesterday that the information and entertainment multimedia conglomerate is investing at least P200 million in the TV home shopping project.

Pineda said the Lopez-owned company’s foray into TV home shopping seeks to provide its viewers more opportunities for their lifestyle needs.

“Sometimes people don’t have the chance to go out and shop for themselves for things they need at home. We are offering consumers better service and better options as life becomes more mobile and hectic,” Pineda said.

Pineda explained that the Philippines is a market that is familiar with TV home shopping.

“TV home shopping is not something new to the Filipino consumer. We’ve also noticed the proliferation of online shopping sites which is quite similar to what we want to do, because it’s really about another option to the mall, to your local neighborhood store,” Pineda said.

A CJ O Shopping Corporation has started operating the O Shopping Channel that broadcasts 24/7 shopping programs on SkyCable and Global Destiny, and airs programs through ABS-CBN’s Channel 2 and Studio 23.

O Shopping offers a wide range of products, from kitchen to home, exercise, and beauty products trusted by customers worldwide.

Eddie Bak, A CJ O president and chief executive expressed his commitment to serve Filipino customers efficiently and noted the potential and importance of the Philippine market as the Filipino population grows.

“It is Important for O O to be present in such a young and dynamic market like the Philippines, and being here is both challenging and exciting for the company. We want to introduce an innovative retail model that allows Filipino consumers to conveniently shop for high-quality products at affordable prices,” Bak said.

The partnership is consistent with CJ O Shopping’s goal to be the largest TV home shopping network In the world by opening in the right markets across the globe. Outside of Korea, CJ O Shopping has presence in Shanghai, Tianjln, and Guangzhou in China, as well as in India, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and Turkey.

“ABS-CBN is the largest and a highly respected broadcasting company in the country, and CJ O Shopping is in good hands with such a partner,” Bak said.

Pineda, meanwhile, expressed optimism for the venture as orders already started coming in during O Shopping Channel’s test broadcast.

“I think that is evidence of Filipinos being ready for TV home shopping. When we were only testing our signal, we already had people calling in to purchase our products,” he said.
